The sheaf filling stitch is a decorative filling stitch which resembles a bundle of wheat. It's made up from three vertical straight stitches which are wrapped together with a horizontal straight stitch. It can be used as a standalone stitch, as a filling stitch or work several across your fabric to create an embroidered pattern.

Materials:
· Fabric – cotton or linen fabric works well. I used osnaburg fabric which is 100% seeded cotton, but you can use any spare fabric you already have.
· Stranded embroidery thread
· Needle
· Scissors
Optional:
· Embroidery hoop
During this tutorial I am using osnaburg 100% cotton seeded fabric, DMC stranded cotton embroidery thread, a hand embroidery needle and a 5” DMC beechwood embroidery hoop.
1. Thread your needle using stranded embroidery thread. For this tutorial I am using four strands of DMC stranded embroidery thread. You can choose how many strands of thread you would like to use.
** When practicing the sheaf filling stitch, you may wish to draw two parallel lines on your fabric. You could use a heat erasable or water erasable pen.
2. Bring your needle through from the back of the fabric to the front on the left side of the top line, point 1.
3. Work a vertical straight stitch by inserting your needle on the bottom line, point 2.
4. Pull your needle and thread all the way through the fabric until the stitch has formed.
5. Bring your needle back up at point 3, leaving a small gap in between this point and your last stitch.
6. Work a second vertical straight stitch by inserting your needle into point 4.
7. Bring your needle up at point 5, leaving a small gap in between this point and your last stitch.
8. Work the third and final straight stitch by inserting your needle into point 6.
9. Bring your needle up through the fabric, to the left of the middle straight stitch. Then, slide your needle under the first straight stitch , towards the left, ensuring your needle does not catch the stitch.
10. Pull your needle and thread all the way through.
11. Bring your needle to the right side and slide your needle under the third straight stitch. Ensure you do not catch the fabric or stitches, just slide your needle in between the stitches and fabric. Then, insert the needle into the fabric, underneath the middle straight stitch.
12. As you pull the needle and thread through the fabric, the straight stitches will gather together.
13. The sheaf filling stitch is complete.
14. Work a few more sheaf filling stitches to practice the stitch.
Sheaf filling stitch top tips
· As you slide your needle under the stitches, be careful not to catch your vertical stitches or fabric, a blunt need can help.
· Work longer or shorter straight stitches to create different looks.
· Vary the size of the gap between your straight stitches to achieve a different look.
· Use a different coloured thread for the middle gathering stitch for a decorative effect.
