Satin stitch is perfect to fill various shapes. I regularly use it to fill flower petals and leaves in my designs. Straight parallel stitches are worked close together which creates a smooth finish and a lovely delicate lustre from DMC embroidery threads.
Materials:
· Fabric – cotton or linen fabric works well. I used osnaburg fabric which is 100% seeded cotton, but you can use any spare fabric you already have.
· Stranded embroidery thread
· Needle
· Scissors
Optional:
· Embroidery hoop
Just for your reference, during this tutorial I am using osnaburg 100% cotton seeded fabric, black DMC stranded cotton embroidery thread, a hand embroidery needle and a 5” DMC beechwood embroidery hoop.
** To practice the satin stitch, I recommend starting with an easy shape, such as a square or rectangle. This tutorial will start by stitching a rectangle and follow with a satin stitch flower.
Satin stitch tutorial: Basic shape
1. Thread your needle using stranded embroidery thread and tie a knot at one end. For this tutorial I have used four strands of DMC stranded embroidery thread. You can choose how many strands of embroidery thread you would like to work with.
2. Start the satin stitch in the middle of your shape by bringing your needle through from the back of the fabric to the front, at point 1.
3. Put your needle back in the fabric at point 2.
4. Gently pull the needle all the way through until your stitch forms on your fabric.
5. Fill one side of your shape by bringing your needle up at point 3, directly next to the start of your last stitch.
6. Put your needle down at point 4, directly next to the end of your first stitch.
7. Continue stitching in this way, under and over, until you have filled one half of your shape with satin stitch. Keep your stitches straight and close together to avoid gaps.
8. Once one half of the shape is complete, restart the satin stitch at the middle point of the shape. Bring your needle up at point 5 and back down at point 6.
9. Once your have completed your basic shape, try stitching other shapes using the satin stitch. The next part of the tutorial shows how to use the satin stitch to form flower petals.
Satin stitch tutorial: Flower shape
* I used a Frixion heat eraseable pen to draw a rough flower shape onto the fabric. Once the satin stitch is complete the red pen lines can be removed with an iron or hairdryer.

2. Start the satin stitch in the middle of your petal by bringing your needle through from the back of the fabric to the front, at point 1.
3. Put your needle back in the fabric at point 2. Direct your needle just on the outside of the drawn line to avoid the line showing through your stitches.
4. Fill one side of your petal by bringing your needle up at point 3, directly next to the start of your last stitch.
6. Put your needle down at point 4, directly next to the end of your first stitch.
7. Continue stitching in this way, under and over, until once side of the petal is complete. Your satin stitches will become shorter in length as you become closer to the outer edge of the petal.
8. Once one half of the petal is complete, restart the satin stitch at the middle point of the petal, point 5.
9. Put the needle down at point 6 and continue to fill the other half of the petal.
10. The petal is now complete. Repeat the same process and work the remaining petals until the flower is complete.
11. Your flower is now complete. If you're feeling inspired after yesterday's French knot tutorial, you could work a French knot in the centre of the flower.
